Joint Explorer and Network expedition to Malaysia for three weeks in summer 2009. FIRM COMMITMENTS NEEDED BY 31st MAY 2008 As some of you may be aware Ayrshire, as an Area, were planning to send an expedition to Malaysia for Explorer Scouts, Scout Network Members and Leaders. This was originally proposed for summer 2008 but for various reasons it was decided to postpone the trip to summer 2009. With the re-structuring the Expedition is now being opened up to Explorers, Networkers and Leaders across the South West and other Regions . The trip will be over a 3 week period, most likely the last two weeks in July and the first week in August 2009. There is a Guide group from Essex going at the same time although they will be doing a complete different project in a different location. We will probably meet up at some point. The first 2 days will be spent relaxing in Kuala Lumpur to get over the flight from the UK, and then it will be off up country for the project. A team from Ayrshire has already visited Malaysia to look at projects and, as examples, there are several boys’ and girls’ homes which needs some work done to them. One of the boys’ homes is looking for a playground and one of the other homes would like some cupboards build. Team Leaders will be visiting Malaysia in the autumn of this year to finalise which projects will be carried out. That, as you will appreciate is putting it rather simply and a lot of detail is still to be sorted out and agreed. We will spend some days relaxing and doing a bit of sightseeing etc. after the project is completed. We anticipate the cost will be in the region of £1,700 per head depending on the projects undertaken and where we go afterwards. The trip being in 2009 gives a whole year to do serious fundraising, seek out grant aid and sponsorship and also to save up. We don’t want the cost of the trip to be a barrier to any young person so if this could be an issue please get in contact with myself or Pat Campbell (Assistant Regional Commissioner for Explorers & Network , South West Region) Between now and the trip a number of training camps will be organized so that you can get to know everyone who will be going, as well as learning, or brushing up on, the practical skills you will need to carry out the project with maximum efficiency. You will be expected to show enthusiasm & willingness to work at Training Camps. We will also expect you to help with the group fundraising and to undertake personal fundraising. Any person who would like to take part should contact the expedition leader (below) with an expression of interest as soon as possible. All applications should be in by 31st May at the latest and an initial get together will be held on the evening of 11th June. Please note that the application form asks for a deposit of £100 but this is not required until your place has been confirmed This is not a “By Selection” expedition but we have a top limit of around 36 including the Leadership Team so it will be a case of 1st come – 1st served.
